Can I repair this equipment or replace this part myself?

That is a question asked everyday and I will try to give you some qualifications and confidence to help determine whether this is something you should try or not.

My experience.  I am always fascinated with how things work.  I will take almost anything apart, i.e. engines, bicycles, printers, phones, automobiles, clocks, kids toys, cassette players, houses, radios and much more. Sometimes because I thought the labor charges were high but most of the time I knew that I would be able to perform the same service myself and learn something useful in the process.  I have excellent hand eye coordination and my hands are very steady. Working with small and precise instruments only requires me to be more accurate and careful. As my experience grew I was able to accurately disassemble and reassemble extremely complex mechanical  / electro-mechanical instruments. While I find photographic equipment challenging I never found it difficult.

Yes, sometimes I have broken parts when servicing something and I learned from that.

I rarely use the word can't.

Useful guidelines for servicing your own equipment and my experience in guiding others.

1)    Anything can be taken apart. Skill and care is required to reassemble the same.

2)    Generally women have better hand/eye coordination and more patience for working on small precise items.

3)    The most common tools required are a good quality Phillips screwdriver, small slotted screwdrivers and a pair of technicians tweezers.

4)    Most damaged photographic equipment requires broken parts to be removed and replaced.

5)    You are the best judge of your ability.

Good Luck

Gray
